French pronunciation: Plus ou plus?

French pronunciation is sometimes (who said always?) tricky. You just learned a new word but it sounds completely different when it is feminine, plural, or even depending on other words surrounding. I often get the question with PLUS. There is three different ways to pronounce it: [ply], [plys] or [plyz] ! Let see how we should pronounce PLUS!

Rules :

We pronounce [ply] when the PLUS has the value of negative:

Exemples :

  • Je ne veux plus de thé.
  • Je n’ai plus de temps.
  • Je n’en veux plus.
  • Il n’y en a plus.
  • Moi non plus.

Reminder: If the following word starts with a vowel or aspirated H then we pronounce [plyz]. Liaison is a mark of formal speech. In the case of PLUS, it is optional (see the article about the French liaison).

Exemples :

  • Il ne reste plus_une miette de ce gâteau. [plyz]
  • Il n’y a plus_à s’inquiéter. [plyz]
  • Il n’a plus_assez de temps. [plyz]
  • Je ne veux plus_un seul bruit ! [plyz]

  • Pierre est plus malin que Jean. [ply]
  • Il est plus grand que moi.[ply]
  • Julie est plus petite que Pierre.[ply
  • Il est plus_occupé que moi. [plyz] (liaison)
  • Il est plus_intelligent que son frère. [plyz] (liaison)
  • Paul est plus_habile de sa main droite. [plyz] (liaison)

  • Jean sort plus rarement que Marc. [ply]
  • Jean travaille plus_intelligemment que Marc. [plyz] (liaison)

  • Jean a plus de travail que Marc. [plys]

  • Jean sort plus que Marc. [plys]
  • Je dors plus que toi. [plys]

In other cases we pronounce [plys].

Exemples :

  • Un peu plus, s’il vous plaît. [plys]
  • Parler le français, c’est un plus. [plys]
  • Ce livre est en plus. [plys]

For the structure Plus… plus… we pronounce [ply] except if there is a liaison (which is optional):

  • Plus nous vivons ensemble, plus nous nous connaissons. [ply]
  • Plus_il fait chaud, plus_il faut boire. [plyz]

Reminder: using optional liaisons are up to you, they make your speech more formal and less casual.
